Nilfisk vacuum from HSC
The Hire Supply Company’s (HSC) range includes the Nilfisk Attix 33-2 M-class vacuum. Most common construction jobs create high dust levels and these often involve the use of power tools like cut-off saws, grinders, breakers and sanders. On-tool extraction is an effective control measure.
The Attix 33-2M has a 33-litre, sealed dust system with semi-automatic filter cleaning, and is designed to meet the tough requirements of the hire industry. Its washable PTFE long-life filter and dual Hepa filter option is designed to minimise maintenance and reduce service costs. A flow sensor, with combined acoustic and LED alerts, monitors the filter and air flow for optimum performance.

Makita hammers it home
Having been selected for Innovation Trail - Live at the Executive Hire Show, and announced as Star Product of the Year at the Speedy Hire Expo, Makita’s DHR400ZKU cordless twin 18V (36V) 40mm SDS-Max rotary demolition hammer won the HAE Hire Awards of Excellence Hire Product of the Year category.
Powered by two Makita 18V LXT batteries, the tool is the first cordless SDS-Max rotary demolition hammer to be launched by the manufacturer including its AVT anti-vibration technology. Performance is said to be equivalent to that of a 40mm mains powered machine.
When hammer drilling into concrete, it has a quoted HAV rating of 5.0m/s2 and, being cordless, it avoids dangers associated with trailing leads. The DHR400ZKU has Makita’s Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS) enabling it to connect to compatible dust extractors via Bluetooth. Once paired, the unit will automatically start when the trigger on the hammer is pulled.
Makita has also introduced SDS-Plus and SDS-Max dust extraction drill bits for drilling into concrete. They have a hollow core to remove dust from the hole when connected to a dust extractor. The range includes 18 drill bits from 12mm to 35mm in diameter and 325mm to 900mm in length.
Hycon’s dust kit trio
Hycon’s silica dust suppression kits can be attached to all the manufacturer’s hand-held breakers. They are designed to spray minimal amounts of water on to the work area to minimise workers’ exposure to harmful dust before it becomes airborne.
There are three variants, one for the HH10 breaker, another for the HH15 to HH27 models, and the third for the HH35 breaker.
Turbo power from DURO
DURO has further developed its entry level performance range of diamond blades with
the DSBM-PT15, which has 15mm ‘pro-turbo’ segments for long life and fast cutting speeds.
It is designed for use in brick, concrete, and general purpose building materials, and can cut small metal sections up to 5mm deep, states the manufacturer. This recent addition follows the introduction of the DU-Mital blade for metal that was highlighted on the Executive Hire Show’s Innovation Trail.
Dustcontrol’s powerful Storm
Dustcontrol UK’s propane-driven DC Storm LPG can be operated without cables and runs for up to eight hours, making it suitable for environments without a convenient supply of electricity.
The machine has a 15kW/21hp motor and is designed to extract harmful created by floor grinders, hammer drills, scarifiers or cutting machines in any kind of surface preparation, demolition and renovation work. It can also perform heavy-duty cleaning with a long suction hose.
The unit offers H- class performance, with a filter leakage of less than 0.005%, and is equipped with a Hepa H13 filter. It also incorporates USB charging ports, LED lighting and has forklift pockets.
Three choices from Bartell
Bartell Global’s diamond blade and core bit selection has been to make it easy for users to choose the appropriate model for the job they are undertaking.
Three distinct ranges are offered, namely Economy, Quality and Specialized. Economy is aimed at customers who need to meet a budget but are less concerned with longevity, while the Quality line-up is for contractors who require long lasting dependable blades without breaking budget. The Specialized range is for specific projects where quality and performance are crucial.
On guard with Preptec
Preptec supplies a range of dust control cowls and cutting guards that are designed to fit most brands of angle grinders. When connected to a suitable M- or H-class vacuum, operation can be completed dust-free to comply with regulations relating to the control of silica dust, says the company.

Hilti highlights dust
Hilti believes that the issue of controlling dust when using power tools is set to rise up the agenda significantly following the Health & Safety Executive’s decision to undertake a consultation on proposals to implement amendments to the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive (2004/37/EC).
This introduces or revises occupational workplace exposure limit (WEL) values for a number of carcinogens, including respirable crystalline silica dust, which can be produced by some construction tasks. The Directive classifies RCS as a carcinogen where it is generated as a result of a work process.
Walid Hussain, National Tool Hire Manager (UK) of Hilti (Gt. Britain) Ltd, told EHN, ”We can offer a wide range of appropriate products as harmonised solutions comprising the tool, captor hood, extraction unit and tubing. This also means hirers have the potential to offer more items with each hire, including consumables.”
A dust collection attachment can be fitted to Hilti’s forthcoming SR30-A36 cordless reciprocating saw, scheduled for launch in August. Claimed to offer similar performance to a corded equivalent,
it has a patented blade holder designed to avoid breakages and an ergonomically designed front grip.
Another August launch will be the TE500-A36 cordless breaker which has a mighty 9.0Ah battery. Again, it offers similar performance to the corded TE500-AVR, can be connected to a dust extractor and is designed for low vibration.
Also new is the DX9 powder actuated nailer, which Hilti believes could allow hirers to target installers fastening metal decks in warehouses, shopping malls and other buildings. The tool fires nails and is operated in a standing position for less fatigue, higher consistency and greater productivity.
Also available is the SDT9, a corded decking tool which drives collated screws into panels, again from a standing position. Hilti believes both tools can be offered as a pair to meet a variety of work requirements.
