Executive Report : Industry “in great shape”
EHN caught up with a number of hirers at the Show to find out what caught their eye and what they got out of their visit.
Stuart Parker from Parker Tool Hire
"I bought another pressure washer from The Hire Supply Company, having purchased one at last year’s Show. It has proved very reliable and is a well-designed, cost-effective unit. I also purchased some more items from DART including diamond blades and consumables, as well as some new work gloves they have introduced which have a thermal lining as well as being waterproof - it is unusual to find these with both qualities.
I am going to be buying an Eliet Major garden shredder from PSD/Ready4Rent, and I got quotes from a number of the van and trailer manufacturers exhibiting. One of the great things about the Show is that it allows you to speak face-to-face with the senior management from manufacturers. I went with a number of questions about certain products and ideas, and was able to get the information I needed directly. I also really enjoyed the Party on the Wednesday evening and I got talking to a lot of suppliers there."
Terry Heal from Bradfords Tool Hire
"As always, Trading Director Keith Hallam and I enjoyed the Show. It is great to catch up with suppliers old and new in a relaxed atmosphere where we do not have the pressures of day-to-day business playing on our mind. The venue is well-located and the evening event allows you to catch up with old colleagues as well as meeting like-minded hirers.
Items that interested us included Altrad Belle’s new BWX 15/250 bowser pressure washer, and Husqvarna’s new 230mm cordless abrasive saw - we see this as an ideal addition that will complement the roofing range carried within our merchant branches. We were also impressed by the M730 post remover from PostPullers: we supply a large number of landscaping contractors within our branch network and this item will be a valuable addition to the hire fleet.
In addition, we looked at GRP towers, mobile access platforms and conveyors. Also of interest was the virtual reality V-Hire training platform from the HAE."
David Hargreaves from Clee Hill Plant Hire with Alan Batty of Bomag (GB)
"We are expanding our fleet of Bomag BMP 8500 remote-controlled multi-purpose compactors which eliminate risks associated with HAV and enhances on-site Health & Safety. In particular, we are adding more equipment for our depot in Newton Abbot which we opened last year. Demand for machines is proving strong both there and at our other locations nationwide, being driven particularly by the housing market.
Regardless of the B-word [Brexit], the construction industry, and particularly housing, is remaining resilient and we are growing to meet the demand from contractors."
Neil Bravery of Skipton Hire Centres, with Richard Palmer and Andrew McCarthy
"The Executive Hire Show is a fantastic event for all hirers to touch base with their key suppliers. You can meet fellow colleagues from within the industry and it’s the main event we
all look forward to.
This year we made a few significant purchases with Belle, PostPullers, CLM and PSD/Ready4Rent. We felt the Show was as busy as ever during the two days, which was good to see, especially during the run up to Brexit. It just shows that the hire industry is in great shape for 2019."
Tim Garland with Gavin Butterfield from Elvington Plant Hire
"Another great Show, although sadly we missed the evening Party and Passionate Hirer Awards due to commitments elsewhere on the Wednesday.
We were particularly impressed with Altrad Belle’s new bowser pressure washer and immediately put an order in for one, along with some more concreting equipment which complements our existing fleet. We’ve also ordered a large quantity of Niftylift machines to strengthen our powered access fleet as we expand further into this market. We lined up some deals with Hilti for some of their new models which we just wouldn’t have seen if we hadn’t attended the exhibition. The Show dates are already in the diary for 2020."
Simon Luscombe from Luscombe Plant & Tool Hire with EHN Editor Alan Guthrie
"I only flew back from a three-week holiday in Australia the day before the Show opened, touching down at the airport at 1.30 in the afternoon, after a journey lasting 29 hours! I wasn’t going to miss the exhibition, so after recovering for a day back home in Ulverston, I set off very early on Thursday morning to get to the Ricoh. There were just so many contacts I wanted to meet up with and new things to see.
As well as having a good look on the Niftylift stand, I bought some more equipment from T-T Pumps, and I was able to speak with a lot of other industry professionals here."
Murray Brodie from Aberdeen-based Palmaris Plant Hire, with Mike Petrie, Gordon McDonald, Jeff Davidson and Altrad Belle’s Scott Herne
"As always we thoroughly enjoyed our two days at the Show. We particularly liked the new floor layout and there were a vast number of new products on display. We bought quite a few new items of plant and equipment including the new Belle bowser pressure washer, diesel vibrating plates and concrete pokers. In addition, it also gave us the opportunity to view a several items of equipment that we may invest in later this year."
Ray Woods from Southport Hire Centre
"I find the Show invaluable for being able to see the latest equipment available. Months later, you invariably get enquiries from customers who need a solution for a specific project or unexpected problem, and you’ll remember a product you saw at the exhibition, so attending the Show can really help your business.
I was very impressed by a new turf scarifier on the PSD/Ready4Rent stand, which seems very well designed and robust. I also touched base with Top Service and found out more about their credit information services. And it was great to see Hiretech back at the Show again after many years, exhibiting their range of floor sanders."
Colin Tall and Paul Saunders from Hire4Lower,
with Brendon Powerwashers’ Chris Hendy and Stuart Haskins
"As always, we attended the Show to see all our regular suppliers at the same time and to meet some new ones, all under one roof. As a busy independent hirer, we sometimes struggle to afford time to sales staff when they come to our premises, so it’s an ideal opportunity for us to make up for that. We also take advantage of Show specials, which make the trip even more worthwhile.
This time around, we placed firm orders with Brendon and Obart, as well as looking at new products in particular from Hilti, Belle and Lyte Ladders & Towers. We also spoke with Xenith Heights and Dustcontrol UK, who we met for the first time, and whom we’re likely to be ordering from very soon. All in all, another good Show, and we look forward to returning once again next year."
Matt Rowe of Hire Standards, with Joshua Matthews, Nick Croker and Rick Biddiscombe
"The reason for attending the Show this year was not to make any specific purchases this time, but to check out the latest innovations and to catch up with JCB regarding some dumpers we had already ordered - I am pleased to say they should be with us in March. We also had a chat with Josh and Mat from MHM and, as a result, since the Show we have been in touch with them regarding some lighting towers.
We also brought along Business Development Manager, Rick, our latest team member. He has been in the industry for many years and attending the exhibition that allowed us to be personally introduced to his wealth of contacts there. As always, the Show was very well attended. It’s great to come along to meet the suppliers in person, some of which you may have been dealing with every week for years, but never actually met before."
Craig Wheldale with Richard Meeks and Dave Atkin from Frank Key Hire
"2019 was the first time we have attended both days of the event, which we found to be particularly beneficial. We were chatting to suppliers and getting our bearings on the first day, networking at the evening Party, and then making decisions on the second morning.
Amongst the equipment that we purchased this year were power floats, trench rammers and vibrating plates from Altrad Belle, 1000mm tile saws from CLM, vacuum slab lifters from Probst, stump grinders from HSC, Bumpa hoists from Mace, diesel pressure washers from Brendon Powerwashers, scaffold towers from Euro Towers and floor tile strippers from National Flooring Equipment, whose products I was particularly impressed with."
