Alan Guthrie reports on Morris Site Machinery's winning product in the Innovation Trail, and its other Show successes.

The success of Morris Site Machinery’s Makinex PHT-140 powered hand truck in winning the Innovation Trail at the Show once again confirms the importance of developing solutions to workplace Health & Safety issues. From 33 eligible entries, the judging panel selected ten Finalists that were previewed in our January/February issue. Each was then ‘mystery shopped’ during the Show before selecting the Winner. The PHT-140 was considered to cover the broadest range of relevant criteria including, besides Health & Safety, addressing key industry issues, worthiness of inclusion in any hire fleet and, of course, genuine innovation.

The product is a simple-to-use materials handling device enabling one person to lift and load items weighing up to 140kg. Made from aluminium, it weighs 40kg and folds flat for storage. Fitted with the hook supplied, it lifts to between 0.3m and 1.9m, and a fork attachment is available for lifting small pallets up to 1.55m. The jib is raised via an electric actuator, operated via thumb controls on the handles, and powered by a 12V battery that is claimed to allow 50 lifting operations before re-charging, which typically takes three hours.

“The machine was actually developed by a hirer who identified a niche for such a product,” said Phil Winnington, MD of Morris, which is the UK distributor. “It was designed by Rory Kennard, from the Kennards Hire family in Australia. He founded the manufacturing company, Makinex Construction Products, which stands for ‘making inefficiencies extinct’, to develop innovative equipment. A significant characteristic of the PHT-140 is its simple operation, and it can reduce the risk of back injuries and other problems associated with lifting tasks. Stickers with QR codes on the machine also provide quick access to product information.”

Morris, which has exhibited at all 10 Executive Hire Shows, devised a demonstration area at the back of its stand, enabling visitors to try it out. “Hirers said they could use it at their own premises and workshops, as well as including it in their hire fleet. Some added that, if they used it to load equipment on to customers’ vehicles, many might want to hire it for convenient unloading at their destination.

“We have tried to highlight innovation. Every product we displayed was new to our range, such as the SMC TL-90 DC-LED lighting tower with LED lamp heads, and we showed two other Makinex machines, namely a breaker trolley to facilitate the removal of tiles and floor surfaces, and a dual pressure washer combining the functions of a rotary cleaner and a pressure washer.”

Morris’ efforts were further rewarded by winning the Show’s Outstanding Exhibitor Award, presented not only for stand design and appearance, but also for criteria such as efficiently fulfilling operational requirements before and during the Show. In addition, the short-listed exhibitors were ‘mystery shopped’ on the first day of the Show by representatives of sponsor, Brandon Hire, assessing criteria like accessibility and the standard of product explanations.

“We really are delighted to win two Awards, and much thought went into designing the stand to make it look fresh and welcoming. We took orders for the PHT-140 at the Show, and news of our Innovation Trail success spread quickly on the Internet. We understand that the Makinex website recorded a staggering 5 million visits via mentions on Facebook and other social media during the week after the Show, and this suggests the product has considerable potential.” •
