TOOLS & EQUIPMENT RISES IN DUMFRIES
A new hire and sales business has been formed in Dumfries, in the wake of builders’ materials supplier WT Burden’s fall into administration last November. Tools & Equipment Ltd is a group of five former Burdens activities, namely the wholesaler Northern Tool & Equipment; Burdens Distribution, which supplied merchants throughout the country; the Burdens Dumfries builders’ merchant business; the Burdens Hire activity based in the town; and the Burdens tool hire depot in Oban. All will be re-branded under the Tools & Equipment name.
MD of the new business is Dave Chandler, formerly WT Burdens’ Development Director, and who was also previously MD of West Skelston Services, which Burdens acquired in 2003. “We will be rejuvenating the hire operation, investing in the fleet and widening our coverage,” he told EHN. “Of our 25 Dumfries-based staff, 20 have their roots in the West Skelston business, including Hire Sales Manager Stan Adamson, Workshop Manager Colin Sterritt and Workshop Manager Alex Morley.
“We have taken over the lease of a 60,000ft2 former Burdens building in Dumfries with a massive yard. Our hire operation can provide anything from a power tool to a 9 tonne dumper, and Northern Tool & Equipment can supply products to any hirer or contractor
in the country.”
Will Hire wins Hire Network Award
Will Hire Ltd of Stourbridge has won the Hire Network Award, which is given for excellent staff performance at an individual depot. The announcement was made during the first day of the Executive Hire Show.
Presenting the Award, Hire Network MD Barry Dean said, “We constantly place orders with independent hirers throughout the country and we gain a good idea of each depot’s performance, in terms of delivering and collecting equipment promptly, liaising with customers, and, generally, having to juggle a lot of things at one time. We believe it is important to recognise this excellent service, and Will Hire has consistently performed to a high standard.”
The two runners-up were the Silvertown depot of Generation Access and Toga Plant Hire’s Hackney outlet.
Boss operation expands
As we first reported in our Nov/Dec issue, Boss Plant Sales has been established by MD Graham Stansfield to fill an equipment distribution gap left by Leach Lewis Plant’s collapse last year. Graham (pictured, right) also runs welfare cabin manufacturer Boss Cabins, which exhibited at the Show, and he was able to catch up with fellow exhibitor Alan Batty, MD of Bomag (GB) Ltd, whose compaction equipment is being distributed by Boss Plant in its area covering the Home Counties and London from its base in Tring.
“We are focused on the basics of sales, service and support, and we only want to promote manufacturers who we believe to be the best in their respective markets,” Graham told EHN. “We are also representing Kubota mini excavators, Manitou forklifts, Gehl skid steer loaders, Tyrolit concrete cutting tools and Socomec hydraulic breakers, plus, of course, Boss Cabins.
“Boss Cabins had a very successful Show, promoting the Big Space welfare unit. We launched it at the 2012 Show and hirers are reporting excellent returns on investment. We received much positive feedback on our stand this year, and we derived a clear benefit from exhibiting as the Show attracted high quality visitors.”
• We will visit and report on the Boss Plant Sales operation in a future issue.
Rohan Lambson (centre), founder and Executive Director of Lambson’s Hire, based in Johannesburg, travelled the furthest to have his picture taken at the Show. A team from Kennards Hire in Sydney actually travelled a greater distance, but, sadly, we didn’t catch up with them
Rohan comments, “I am so glad that I attended the Show and it will definitely be on my agenda for me and my management in the future. Of the new products that we are interested in, concrete, grinding and polishing will be high on the agenda.
“I caught up with a lot of people during my visit. Gary McWilliam from Hire Supply, Chris Hendy from Brendon Powerwashers, Joe Wilmer of Hatz and Iain Curran of HGI. All of these people I have known for some time and have done business with over the years.
“The highlight for me was having lunch with TowerLight’s Ray Caulfield (left) and HAV expert David Allan. Our association goes back to 1978 when I was then the divisional manager for the construction equipment division of SAPCO. We were distributors for Macdonald and Errut, thus the relationships with David and Ray started.
“I subsequently started Lambson’s Hire in March 1980 and our friendship has continued and remains to this day. Both David and Ray have been out to South Africa a number of times and I have had the pleasure of taking them to our world famous Kruger National Park.”
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
Sincere thanks to all who helped raise the magnificent sum of £5,000 for Battersea Dogs Home in memory of our former colleague Nigel Carter, who passed away last November.
More Show success for Addex
Addex Trading reports that HSS has ordered 50 more Arbortech Allsaw 170 brick and mortar saws. HSS added the tool to its fleet following last year’s Show, and Category Buyer Paul Salmon confirmed the latest deal on the supplier’s stand at this year’s Show.
Addex’s Divisional Sales Manager, Ian McIntyre, says that “Brandon Hire has also placed an order for the Allsaw, having seen it at the Show, so the tool’s presence in the hire market is certainly growing.”
Altrad Belle supports Passionate Hirer Awards
Following the announcement of the 2013 Passionate Hirer Awards, Altrad Belle MD Ray Neilson generously presented a Minimix 150 mixer and a Warrior wheelbarrow to each of the winners.
Ray made the first presentation to James Clutterbuck and Laura Roberts of WHC Hire Services, whose Tewkesbury depot won in the Large Hire Super Centre category at the Awards.
Our Visitor Questionnaire prize draw winner is Tony Criddle of Beaver Tool Hire (Chichester) Ltd. Our cheque for £250 is on its way. Honest.
