AMMANN TO DISTRIBUTE CORMIDI
Ammann Equipment, based in Stratford upon Avon, has taken over distributorship of Cormidi tracked dumpers in the UK, renewing an association that dates back seven years.
“In 2002, we began distributing Cormidi machines, badged as Ammann, to complement our 500kg and 2 tonne mini excavators,” said Ammann Equipment MD, Robert Brown. “There are still original machines in the field that we can service and supply spares for.”
In 2004, Haydock-based Cormidi UK was established to supply a wider range of models under the Cormidi name, and this coincided with Ammann Equipment’s decision to focus on other product areas. However, Cormidi UK’s recent entry into administration (as we know to our own cost) has now led to Ammann’s appointment to handle all sales and service enquiries for machines of 500kg upwards.
“Our two companies also have links in other European markets,” says Robert Brown, who is pictured (right) on Ammann’s Show stand, with Armando Cormidi, General Manager of the Italian manufacturer. “In France, Ammann distributes Cormidi machines, and in Italy several dealers handle both ranges. Ammann Equipment is able to hold good stocks of machines and spares, and provides service backup - even for original Ammann-branded compact dumpers that are still working in the field.”
• During the Show, Ammann Equipment announced that all its plate compactors have now been independently tested by OPERC at Loughborough University for HAV levels. One model, the 400mm AVP 1240, achieved a figure of only 1.4m/s2, meaning it could be used continuously throughout a working day without the operator exceeding permitted HAV exposure levels.
HIRE LINK UK (MIDLANDS) LTD
In response to a number of calls from hirers and suppliers alike in the last couple of months, we feel that it is appropriate that we should comment on the situation at Hire Link UK Ltd. In the same way that EHN highlights and praises hirers when they have performed to a high standard, so we have a responsibility to comment when hirers fall well short of that standard.
Having been a Finalist in our Passionate Independent Hirer Award 2008 and named as a short listed candidate by The Hire Network for its annual Award, we have featured Directors David Green and Jason Leeney of Hire Link UK Ltd in two issues of EHN in 2008.
Since then Hire Link UK Ltd has entered Creditors Voluntary Liquidation and, under arrangements made by the liquidator, has been acquired by Hire Link UK (Midlands) Ltd. We understand that both David Green and Jason Leeney are involved in the management and control of this new company.
Our concern is that Hire Link UK Ltd has left a trail of debts with numerous hirers across the Midlands, from whom it has, presumably, re-hired plant and equipment and not paid for it. Those hirers owed money comprise most of the current Tool Hire Top Ten, as well as several independents. In addition, the list of suppliers owed money by Hire Link UK Ltd includes no less than 18 exhibitors at last month’s Executive Hire Show, together with other recognised industry suppliers.
Hirers and suppliers might like to bear this information in mind before dealing with this new company.
Youngman appoints APS
Youngman Group has appointed Huntingdon-based Access Platform Sales (APS) as a service provider for its new Boss X3 compact electric scissor lift, which was officially unveiled on the company's stand at the Show. APS will be adding the Boss X3 to its existing range of products for sale.
"APS serves a well-established customer base outside our core markets. Not only does it provide a first class service operation, it has an extensive sales team that can provide site surveys, demonstrations and training, which can only strengthen our market offering," said Youngman MD Paul Bentley, pictured (right) with APS’ MD Jim Daintith (centre) and General Manager Ian James. APS has also ordered the first tranche of Boss X3s to be supplied. The battery-powered machine has a maximum 2.55m platform height.
Birchwood Price Tools merger
Power tool wholesaler, Price Tools, is being merged with Birchwood Products. The combined business will be called Birchwood Price Tools (BPT) and begins trading from April.
Birchwood and Price Tools are both divisions of The BSS Group, with complementary products and sharing many customers. The business itself will be re-branded and restructured, with Birchwood’s Nottingham site becoming the head office and main distribution centre. Price Tools’ Birmingham site will become a flagship BPT branch, with further locations in St Albans and in Naas, Eire.
BPT’s Head of Marketing, Chris Mellor-Dolman, told EHN that the respective management teams will remain, with Birchwood’s MD Anthony Smith and Sales Director Paul Simpson retaining the same roles with BPT, as does Price Tools General Manager/Director, Paul Nieduszynski. 85 staff work at Nottingham and 60 at Birmingham, although some personnel will transfer to Nottingham, where the premises have recently been expanded.
BPT will offer an expanded range of 20,000 products including power tools, hand tools and site equipment, and brands such as Bosch, DeWalt, Defender, Makita, Scruffs and Van Vault. As a result of the merger, the sales force will double in size.
Fairview lifts Hire Network trophy
The Epsom branch of specialist hirer Fairview Lifting Gear Services has won the Hire Network Award, which rewards staff service excellence at a specific depot. “Fairview staff do what they say they will, giving reliable, courteous service,” said Hire Network MD Barry Dean, who presented the Award during the Show. Fairview, based in Essex, has a third depot in Liverpool. Hire Network Award runner-up was Mark 1 Hire’s Southend branch.
HSS wins Hilti e-commerce award
At the Show, Hilti (GB) Ltd presented an e-commerce award to HSS Hire. The award acknowledged HSS as Hilti’s largest e-commerce partner for Great Britain, taking into account the amount of traffic and business they have created online over the last 12 months. Our photo shows HSS Commercial Director Phil Wolff (left), receiving the award from Hilti GB MD Adrian Murphy.
On the Show itself, Adrian comments, “it was a positive event during challenging times. The steady flow of national and independent customers gave us a great opportunity to reinforce our relationships and we were also pleased with the business return. Our Fleet Management sales at the 2009 Show were over 50% higher than last year’s, bringing to 80 the number of hirers that are enjoying the benefits of one monthly payment in return for the latest Hilti products and services.“
Xpert wins Show prize draw
The winner of the £500 prize draw on the New Product Zone at the Show is Xpert Hire & Sales Ltd of Naas in Co. Kildare. Having voted for the Dustcontrol CD Air Cube 2000, the winner of the Speedy Award for Most Innovative Product, Xpert MD John Morrissey has decided to invest the money in a Dustcontrol system. “Dustcontrol is arranging to deliver the unit and demonstrate it for us. We hope that it will be the start of a personal business relationship.
“It is so easy to fly into Birmingham, grab a cab and get to the Ricoh within 20 minutes. The Show was very beneficial for Xpert this year as there were plenty of offers and a lot of value. Visiting the Show with Colm Cooney of Clare Hire & Sales in Ennis, we each bought at least £10,000 worth of equipment, which we are in the process of taking delivery of. The Party on the Wednesday night was also a great opportunity to meet suppliers face to face and speak to them in a social setting, and gain a better understanding of the equipment that they are supplying.”
Brandon’s vehicle for success
Brandon Hire presented one of its customers with a brand new Toyota Hilux during the Show, as the prize in a scratch card competition run throughout its branches in the north west of England. Peter Copsey, a mechanical fitter whose local branch is in Bolton, was handed the keys to the vehicle by Brandon Managing Director, Tim Smith (left) and Operations Director, Tony Partridge, outside the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
